Last week, we were delighted to win a Sussex Heritage Trust Landscape and Gardens Award for our ‘Accessible Meadow Garden’ project in East Sussex.
The project, completed in May 2023, involved transforming an acre of roughly ploughed clay subsoil into a beautiful meadow garden brimming with opportunities for wildlife and biodiversity. Colourful, fragrant and drought tolerant planting was selected to surround a wheelchair accessible courtyard and mixed native hedging was chosen for the perimeter. Sustainability was at the heart of the design. On-site materials were reused wherever possible and a land drain was installed to channel surface water into a seasonal bog garden.
The judges comments included;
“Effective and high quality planting design and detailed thought was given to water control through an expansive wildflower meadow. Much seasonality in the colour scheme with a lovely balance of textures.”
The ceremony was held at the Amex stadium, Brighton and the awards were presented by the Trust’s President The Rt. Hon. Lord Egremont. Unfortunately Kristina was unavailable but Harriet from the team attended and had the pleasure of collecting the award. Thank you to the Sussex Heritage Trust and to Alitex Glasshouses who sponsored the award.
We are also delighted that the garden will be featured in Gardens Illustrated Magazine later this year with beautiful photos by Annaick Guitteny.
