4 Waterworks Cottages
Kristina's own garden, begun in 2009 and developed over the next 11 years.
4 Waterworks Cottages garden was originally one long sloping lawn descending from the front to the back of the property, with shapeless areas of overgrown shrubs and trees. There wasn't single area of level ground for table. A house extension was built in 2009 and with the diggers came the opportunity to terrace areas of the garden and dig out a pond. And so began a long project of hard work spanning over several years!
The garden is now split into three main areas at the front, side and rear. A perennial wildflower meadow and pond dominate the front garden with fruit trees, loosely planted borders and a small formal quartered parterre garden with brick paths and a bench at the far side.
Through a gate by the pond is a terraced side garden whose centrepiece is a 'fire-circle' of sleeper seats around a fire bowl. Surrounded by 'hot coloured' perennial planting and several trees, the whole garden is bounded by a hornbeam hedge creating a cosy room for evening gatherings.
Passing through the hedge and down some steps you enter the rear garden. There are Mediterranean inspired terraced beds alongside the house, leading to hidden sun terrace. A long wisteria clad pergola with a patio beneath provide a shady dining area. At the centre is a large lawn surrounded by mixed planting beds of unusual trees and shrubs and towering perennials and grasses.
A productive area on the west side of the garden has a fruit cage, vegetable beds, a greenhouse and 'solar-dome' planted with exotic plants. In the top corner are several magnolia trees and a circular arrangement of beds quartered by paths and planted with sun loving perennials.
Time never stands still in the garden and Kristina responds to the garden as it evolves, tweaking the planting and making plans for exciting new areas!
